Kumarakom Lake Resort

KLR is ultimate luxury spread over 25 acres at the edge of picturesque backwaters of Vembanand Lake, which is supposedly the second largest lake in the world. The resort has all the modern facilities set in traditional fashion amidst natural landscape of Kerala. The beauty of the place makes you realize why they call Kerala, ‘Gods Own Country’.

You can reach KLR from Munnar after a 5-hours road drive. At the entrance, you are greeted by smiling faces of men dressed in white overalls and
women in traditional sarees. As you soak in the cool breeze blowing from the backwaters, they serve you traditional refreshing coconut water. The first feeling about the place is of immense beauty coupled with tranquility.

Beyond the resorts’s rather small front yard lie plush green lawns dotted with
coconut trees and interspersed by small streams, which makes you feel as if you are walking on small islands surrounded by waters from the lake. The liberal use of wood furnishing only enhances the feeling of being at home with nature. The resort has 59 cottages including 2 presidential suites, 26 meandering pool villas and 31 luxury private pool villas. If the presidential suites are ultimate in opulence with private pools and luxurious interiors, the delightful setting of meandering pool villas with access to 200m long crystal clear pool is perfect for a cosy holiday.

It is claimed that the cottages are 100 year old houses relocated from other regions. They still retain same old worldly charm and come with all the facilities of a five-star room. Whereas the entrance to the villa is made of a heavy wooden door with a large latch, the glass door at the back opens to steps leading into the pool. One can spend a cosy evening lounging in the beautiful pool and sipping on a wine. And after a dip in the pool it is fun to take a shower in the open to sky bathroom, which adds to the uniqueness of the place.

The resort offers choice of vide variety of cuisines as part of its buffet or ala-carte menu. The buffets served at Etukettu restaurant are a foodie’s delight and they spoil you with a good mix of western continental, north Indian and traditional south Indian food. Besides traditional fish preparation of Kerala, chicken, lamb and prawns, a non-vegetarian can also feast on beef. For non-environment-friendly, there are choices of green vegetables, south Indian cuisine and traditional preparations of Kerala served with coconut chutney. In the evening one can enjoy a cup of tea served in the lawns near the lake.

One has a choice of enjoying the private/ meandering pool or taking a dip in the main pool which is even more fascinating as it is located on the edge of the backwater lake and one can see sunset over the horizon while floating in that pool. The romance with nature continues in the evening with night lamps on and the cool breeze blowing in from the lake.

The resort arranges sun set tours atop a boat, organizes evening cultural programmes and day time activities like weaving, pottery, painting etc. It also offers the usuals like an open bar, indoor games, wifi-connectivity (though the connectivity wasn’t good) and good room service.

The trip to KLR is not complete without spending a night at the Houseboat. The houseboat leaves at noon, cruises gently in backwaters for 5-6 hours at about 10km/hour, takes an overnight halt in backwaters and returns to the resort in morning. During return journey the boat cruises through the widest part of the lake that stretches over 9 km! The ends are so far apart that it feels like cruising in an ocean. The boat has a very comfortable air conditioned room with attached bathroom and a separate eating area. There is a chef on the boat who serves you your choice of meals and also evening tea and coffee. The meals are delicious, especially the fish fry and butter chicken. The boat cruises slowly through canals surrounded by dense plantations and lined with rows of coconut trees. The calmness is only disturbed by water rippling away from the boat, gentle humming sound of the engine and chirping of numerous birds flocking the surrounding marshy lands. During night halt, the head used to noisy city life is possessed by an eerie silence and you wish if time could stand still.

A must do tour, which you would surely want to do again.
